In a significant achievement for neonatal care, the Government Medical College (GMC) Doda has successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing an impressive 6 kilograms at birth, marking one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at the institution. The baby was born on October 25, 2025, at 1:20 PM, to a diabetic mother, and developed severe respiratory distress within the first half-hour of life.
Upon realizing the newborn’s critical condition, healthcare providers promptly admitted the infant to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for specialized care. Given the baby’s large-for-gestational-age status and immediate need for respiratory assistance, medical staff initiated advanced neonatal respiratory support right away.
The newborn remained under close observation for vital parameters such as respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, and temperature. Medical teams monitored blood sugar levels and neurological activity diligently. Fortunately, within the next few days, the baby showed signs of improvement, allowing for a gradual reduction of respiratory support.
In the final 72 hours leading up to discharge, the baby maintained stable independent breathing and normal oxygenation levels. Additionally, there were no recorded episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation, confirming the newborn’s recovery trajectory. After exhibiting consistent clinical stability, the healthcare team discharged the infant in good health, with routine follow-ups scheduled for ongoing care.
This successful clinical outcome stemmed from the expert guidance of the Head of the Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Najmus Saqib, alongside esteemed faculty members including Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. The assistance of dedicated senior and junior residents further ensured that the baby received comprehensive care.
Special recognition is due to the nursing and paramedical staff at GMC Doda, whose vigilant monitoring and compassionate care played a crucial role in the baby’s recovery. Their unwavering dedication exemplifies the spirit of teamwork necessary for pediatric care.
This landmark case underscores the growing expertise within the Department of Pediatrics at GMC Doda, reflecting the institution’s commitment to delivering quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children in the region. As GMC Doda continues to enhance its neonatal services, such achievements reinforce the importance of skilled healthcare providers and collaborative efforts in saving lives.
